Some street food institutions don’t need reinvention. They just need the right stage.

This March, one of Mexico City’s most talked-about taquerias, El Vilsito, lands at Howard Smith Wharves and Manly Wharf as part of La Mexicana a bespoke Mexican food festival running alongside Artemus Group’s cult-favourite Margarita Week.

Two musicians performing with large sombreros in a garden setting, one playing guitar and the other singing into a microphone.

And this isn’t a “tribute” menu.

Two chefs from El Vilsito are travelling from Mexico City to Australia to prepare the tacos exactly as they are served back home bringing a Michelin Guide-recommended street food institution to Australian shores for the first time.

From Mechanic’s Workshop to Global Recognition

By day, El Vilsito operates out of a mechanic’s workshop in Mexico City. By night, it transforms into one of the city’s most electric taco destinations.

A colorful array of tacos served on green and blue plates, topped with chopped onions and cilantro. Accompanied by bowls of red and green sauces, and a pink bowl filled with lime wedges.

Recommended by the Michelin Guide, featured in The New York Times’ 36 Hours in Mexico City and spotlighted on Netflix’s Taco Chronicles, the taqueria has built international status while staying rooted in tradition.

Its signature? Tacos al pastor marinated pork slow-roasted on a vertical spit, thinly shaved and served in warm corn tortillas. Smoky, sweet, savoury and layered with history.

A cocktail glass filled with a clear drink, garnished with a salted rim, on a wooden table with a patterned background.

Now, that same vertical spit technique and generational recipe will be recreated live in Brisbane and Sydney.

La Mexicana: More Than a Festival

La Mexicana expands Artemus Group’s Margarita Week into a broader celebration of Mexican flavour, culture and colour.

Expect:

• El Vilsito’s tacos prepared by visiting chefs
• Immersive precinct styling inspired by contemporary Mexican street culture
• Mexican cocktails across participating venues
• Music, energy and atmosphere designed to feel transportive

In partnership with Patrón, Margarita Week will showcase sweet, smoky, spicy and savoury interpretations from classic Tommy’s margaritas to venue-specific twists.

This is flavour with context. Food with story.

The Collaboration

The Australian takeover began when Howard Smith Wharves Brand Director Katie Moubarak experienced El Vilsito firsthand on a culinary research trip to Mexico City.

That visit sparked a connection with Sandra Blanco, daughter of El Vilsito owner Juan Carlos Blanco, who will travel to Australia alongside the chefs.

For nearly forty years, the Blanco family has served tacos from the same address. Bringing those recipes and that energy to Australia feels less like expansion and more like exchange.
