Two of Ayurveda’s most revered botanicals, formulated by brothers who grew up with them.

Most skincare brands that reference Ayurveda are referencing it in retrospect. AyurScience is not. The Australian brand was founded by brothers Rajesh and Mitesh Thakorlal, registered pharmacists and second-generation custodians of Ayurvedic practice, who grew up inside the daily Dinacharya rituals they now formulate around. For AyurScience, skin balance is not a contemporary wellness idea. It is inherited knowledge.

What they have done with it is the interesting part. Rather than recreating traditional remedies, the brothers have applied pharmaceutical formulation to them, and the result is Ayur-Active, a proprietary complex pairing Amla, or Indian gooseberry, with Tulsi, holy basil. Two botanicals with 5,000 years of use behind them, selected for how they work together on skin.

The proof points

Amla is the brightener. It carries up to 20 times the vitamin C of oranges, and in vitro research has demonstrated 41 to 47 percent inhibition of melanin production in a keratinocyte and melanocyte co-culture model. Tulsi is the defender. Clinical research on a 3 percent holy basil extract showed a 14 percent improvement in skin tonicity and a 15 percent improvement in elasticity after eight weeks, in a randomised double blind study.

Behind both sits the AyurScience Research Institute, the brand’s own research and formulation hub, where plant knowledge is examined, refined and translated into something that has to perform on modern skin.

The ritual

Ayur-Active anchors the PURITY Skincare Ritual, a four step set designed to reset, rebalance and restore, priced at $214.80 for the collection.

  • Foaming Gel Cleanser, $39.95, 150ml. Lifts oil and buildup without stripping, with ashwagandha, boswellia and ginger supporting the barrier and the microbiome.
  • Blemish Spot Treatment, $44.95, 30ml. A concentrated corrective serum with bakuchiol and gentle glycolic and salicylic acids, hydrating ingredients counterbalancing the correction.
  • Hydrating Lotion, $69.95, 60ml. Squalane, niacinamide, glycerin and manjistha in a light daily moisturiser built for resilience rather than occlusion.
  • Purifying Mask, $59.95, 50g. Kaolin and bentonite clays with glycolic, lactic and salicylic acids, turmeric and bakuchiol, used two to three times a week.

Cleanser, treatment, lotion morning and night, mask a few times weekly. Rhythm and consistency are the Ayurvedic principles doing the quiet work here, and they happen to be exactly what dermatologists say too.

That is the case AyurScience is making. Ancient botanicals, a contemporary lens, and an ingredient complex that makes inherited skin wisdom relevant to how we actually care for skin now.
