The defining bag of the moment is wider than it is tall, sits under the arm like a secret, and quietly makes every upright tote look like it is trying too hard.

For years, bags went up. Taller totes, bigger top handles, more structure, more announcing. Then the east-west shape arrived, long, low and horizontal, and the whole conversation changed register.

Vertical bags ask for attention. Horizontal bags assume it.

The east-west bag is all over the 2026 runways, the street style feeds and the resale charts, and it is not hard to see why. It is the baguette’s worldlier cousin: slim, elongated, tucked under the arm or slung across the body, with the kind of confidence that does not need to announce itself.

Why The Sideways Bag Reads As Expensive

Proportion, mostly. A bag that is longer than it is tall follows the line of the body instead of fighting it. It lengthens an outfit the way a good heel lengthens a leg, except you can carry your phone in it.

It also solves the eternal bag problem: big enough to be useful, never bulky enough to look like luggage. The east-west holds the essentials flat and lean, so you look organised even when the inside says otherwise.

Fashion loves to overcomplicate things. The east-west bag refuses.

How To Carry It Without Overthinking It

Under the arm is the default and the most flattering. Worn this way it does its best 90s impression, especially in suede or smooth black leather.

Crossbody works when the strap is long and the rest of the outfit is clean: straight-leg denim, a sharp jacket, nothing competing at the waist. And the east-west tote, the bigger sibling, is the one to take to work when you want the proportions of a baguette with the capacity of real life.

One rule: let it lie flat. The whole point of this bag is the line. Do not overstuff it into a lump.
