When Swiss photographer Sebastian Magnani entered the Sydney gallery for his opening night—cape flowing dramatically behind him—he made the kind of entrance you’d expect from someone who just spent months photographing Batman waiting at the laundromat.
Yes, really.
His latest series, Daily Bat, takes the cultural icon out of Gotham and drops him into the ordinary, with unexpectedly profound results. From reading in a public library to standing alone at a suburban bus stop, Magnani’s Batman isn’t fighting crime—he’s just… living.
The images are beautifully strange, at once cinematic and disarming in their intimacy. And in an age of digital illusion, what’s even more surprising is that every frame is real.
“People wondered if the work was AI,” Magnani told Style Machine. “Absolutely none of it is.”
That precision—the use of natural light, exacting composition, and meticulous styling—is what gives Daily Bat its edge. There’s no digital wizardry here, only the quiet magic of photography at its most thoughtful. One collector who purchased the Batman in the Library print admitted she couldn’t stop thinking about it. “It just made me smile,” she said. “There’s something so human about it.”
That emotional current runs through all of Magnani’s work. Born and based in Zurich, he began his creative career in advertising before turning to photography full-time in 2011. His artistic approach is rooted in intimate portraiture and masterful colourwork, creating scenes that are emotionally rich yet stripped of artifice.
With Daily Bat, he takes it a step further—bringing humour, humility, and a sense of quiet play to the superhero narrative. Why Batman?
“Superman is too perfect,” he explained at the opening. “People can’t connect.”
Magnani’s Batman, on the other hand, is lonely, awkward, and instantly relatable. He’s suited up but off duty. A masked man wandering through everyday life with no villain to fight but time itself.
Magnani’s has won multiple international photography awards and has developed a reputation for projects that blend fantasy with emotional depth.
