Born from the salty shores of Western Australia, C.DESIGN became a global icon in the ’90s, blending effortless elegance with the artistry of performance and ballet. Now, two decades after stepping back to focus on family, Claire Metcalf and her loved ones have reimagined the brand for a new generation. In this exclusive interview with The Tastemaker Chronicles, Claire shares the story of C.DESIGN’s evolution, its roots in timeless design, and the inspiration behind the Spring/Summer ’25 collection.

1. What’s the one item in your wardrobe you can’t live without?

The perfect black cami.. sounds simple but basics, especially foundation basics that take me from day to night seamlessly are my go to.. which is how we design our swimwear to go from beach to bar and into our daily wardrobes with ease. Also a great bag.. I’m currently reaching for an Isabel Marant clutch gifted by my kids and is on repeat as it works with everything. 

2. Who or what inspires your designs the most?

The female form and creating a beautiful silhouette.  

3. If you could wear one C.DESIGN piece forever, which would it be?

Our corset maillot for the functionality of swim and as a stunning ready to wear staple. 

4. What’s your go-to beach look?

Classic black maillot paired with a relaxed mesh over shirt or resort dress.

5. What do you love most about designing swimwear?

The precision and technical aspect of designing swimwear, as the smallest design edits elevate the silhouette.

6. What’s your favourite fashion trend for 2025?

Being a brand established in 1993 we’ve witnessed so many trends come and go. Sustainability is at the forefront of our minds in 2025 and dubbed the ‘Sustainability Trend’ which prioritises quality and longevity, recycled fibres and a sustainably conscious approach to design. The garments are made with a minimal and timeless approach to be handed down through generations.  

We are also loving the colour palette trends in 2025 particularly deep browns and dusty blues that are on Pantones Hot list.

7. What’s the first thing you designed for C.DESIGN’s relaunch?

We revisited C.DESIGN’S 90’s archive collection and handpicked some of our favourites including our String Bikini, Halter Maillot and Strapless Maillot.

8. What’s the best style advice you’ve ever received?

Dress for first class.. i.e.. be comfy, but stylish enough to be ready to be bumped for an upgrade.

9. Who’s your ultimate style icon?

There are many though Grace Kelly comes to mind today

10. What emotion or feeling do you hope every C.DESIGN piece evokes in the women who wear it?

Confidence. Selecting the perfect swimsuit can be daunting and we go to great lengths to cut silhouettes that are form flattering, sculpting and have timeless appeal so our C.DESIGN women feels confident and empowered in  their choice.
